Police find 11kg of cocaine hidden in wheelchair at Barcelona Airport
Police discovered 11kg of suspected cocaine concealed in a wheelchair at Barcelona Airport.
Passenger traffic had increased significantly following Saint Jordi celebrations and the extended Easter holiday, prompting authorities to strengthen security measures.
Officials said that traffickers often take advantage of busy periods to smuggle narcotics through crowded terminals.
A solo traveller from Brazil who had a physical disability gave nervous and hesitant responses when questioned about the purpose of his visit.
Agents identified the individual as a suspected drug mule, aligning with a growing trend in which criminal networks exploit people with physical or mental disabilities to transport drugs.
Investigators inspected the electric wheelchair. Upon examining the battery compartments, they discovered signs of tampering and located 10 packages containing 7.5kg of cocaine.
Footage shows officers extracting the alleged drugs from the wheelchair's battery housing.
The following day, another foreign national with reduced mobility was apprehended in a similar situation.
The second suspect had travelled from Bogota, Colombia, in a motorised wheelchair containing 3.8kg of cocaine hidden within its battery casings.
Both individuals were arrested on charges related to public health offences.
In a separate incident earlier this month, Spanish police seized 50kg of cocaine bound for the UK.
Officers confiscated the illegal items hidden in a truck in Madrid, with four individuals arrested during the operation.
The investigation into the criminal organisation allegedly smuggling drugs from Spain to other countries began in early March.
