US: Concerned US farmers hope for continued cooperation with China amid tariff challenges
Storyline: U.S. farmers have expressed concern about their livelihoods, fearing they will have to scale back crop planting in the face of the uncertainty caused by the Trump administration's tariff measures. The shifting policies have left the country's soybean and corn farmers worried that they may be unable to sell their yields to the Chinese market, which has long been one of the largest importers of these U.S. crops. In Iowa, a state known for its robust soybean and corn production, 40 percent of soybean production was exported in 2024, and 40 percent of those exports went to China, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. However, this trade is now at risk due to the ongoing tariffs. Grant Kimberley, a sixth-generation farmer who owns thousands of acres of farmland, said that the measures have forced him and other farmers to make difficult decisions. The Iowa Soybean Association has called for actions to mitigate the tariffs' impact, warning that tariffs against China will severely hurt the state's soybean production, disrupt exports, and even reduce agricultural employment. Amid the current challenges, Kimberley expressed hope for restoring stability, calling for continued cooperation with China as a key trade partner. Shotlist: Iowa, USA - April 22, 2025: 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Grant Kimberley, farmer: "There's a lot of uncertainty that farmers are concerned about right now. We don't know what the long-term market view and potential is and that's the uncertain thing. We are in the planting season right now, and I think what it may end up doing, though, is that for farmers to make a risk management decision to lower their risk. I think we will see less soybeans planted in the United States." 5. Various of corn transported to truck 6. Various of farmland, dry crop 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Grant Kimberley, farmer: "We have a long-standing partnership and relationship, and we've always worked together to find mutually beneficial, win-win opportunities for both sides, and we're hopeful in the long term that can happen again. Right now there's uncertainty though, and that is a concern." 9. Various of granaries, trucks traveling, farmland. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
