Electricity post collapses on car after trailer snags cables
This is the dramatic moment an electricity post fell onto a car when a trailer truck snagged power cables.
The wagon was driving through a junction when the backhoe it was carrying caught on low-lying power lines in Khon Kaen, Thailand, on April 23.
CCTV footage shows electric posts shaking before one of them smashed into an oncoming car below. Bundles of cables also fell onto the road, causing a traffic jam at the intersection.
The Honda SUV driver Peach and his passenger emerged uninjured from their vehicle.
Police received a report at 10 am, and arrived at the scene, where they found the trailer driver for questioning.
A police spokesman said: 'After inspections, we have made a record of the incident and will invite the driver and the owners of three damaged vehicles involved to give their statements to the police before continuing with the legal process.'
The accident reportedly caused a widespread power outage, and 35,000 baht (around 800 GBP) in damages.
Shocked driver Peach said he felt fortunate to have been unharmed after the accident.
He said: 'I was just driving to work as usual. When I reached the intersection, I saw the trailer truck snag the power lines. The arm of the backhoe it was carrying caught them and dragged them down onto the road.
'People nearby started shouting to warn the driver, but I don't think he heard them. Eventually, he stopped, but it was too late. I drove forward and the power pole suddenly fell and crushed my roof. The windshield was shattered.
'My friend and I were in complete shock. We stayed inside the car until a local came and knocked on the window asking if we were okay. So we got out and waited for the insurance company.
'The damage looked really bad. I wasn't sure if the car can be used again, but for now I just have to wait for the insurance company to settle the compensation details.'
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
