A heroic driver stopped to save an injured owl he found on the road and took it home to care for.

Kailas Laohabut was on his way home when he spotted the barn owl lying on the concrete with blood around its beak in Lopburi, Thailand.

Footage shows Kailas picking up the bird and checking it for other injuries on April 20 evening.

He carried it back to his car and drove home before taking it to the vets for a check-up.

They did lab tests on the nocturnal animal, like an X-ray, but found it had no broken bones.

Kailas said: 'It was weak. We think it was a pet bird that escaped from its cage and got lost.

'There was a small trace of blood around its beak. We did two rounds of X-rays and found no broken bones. It was given vitamins and nutrients. By the next morning, it had regained some energy.'

When the creature was better, he contacted Department of National Parks officers to take over in caring for it.

The bird of prey is now living in an animal shelter where it would remain until its owner could claim it.
