..MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - APR. 24, 2025: Catholic faithful gathered in Mexico City's historic Metropolitan Cathedral on Thursday (Apr. 24) to attend a mass held in honor of Pope Francis, as a sign of reverence and solidarity with the pontiff. A large photograph of the Pope was placed prominently on the cathedral’s main altarpiece, drawing attendees who approached to pray and take pictures. The mass, marked by solemn hymns and prayers, reflected the deep devotion many Mexicans hold for the head of the Catholic Church. The pope was admitted to a hospital in Rome in February with bronchitis, which developed into bilateral pneumonia. He was discharged after 38 days to continue his recovery at his Vatican residence. He died of a stroke followed by a coma and heart failure, the Vatican announced Monday. “The cause of Pope Francis' death has been identified as a stroke, followed by a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse,” Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate.
