Los Angeles, United States - April 24, 2025 04/24/2025 12:00 pm (GMT-0700) MONTEBELLO, Calif. – Members of the Armenian community gathered at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Montebello this morning to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The ceremony, organized by the United Armenian Council of Los Angeles, a coalition of nearly 45 Armenian organizations, began at 10:30 a.m. The event included a religious ceremony featuring communal prayers for the lives lost, the placement of flowers at the memorial, and remarks that emphasized the importance of remembrance and justice, as well as the need to educate future generations. Organizers also spoke about the recent war in Artsakh, as well as the ongoing atrocities and ethnic cleansing occurring in the region. Organizers and attendees emphasized the importance of teaching younger generations about the tragic chapters in history to ensure it is never forgotten. In honor of this solemn occasion, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously declared April 24, 2025, as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. This declaration reflects the county’s commitment to honoring the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who perished during the genocide and to supporting the Armenian community’s ongoing efforts for justice and recognition. The Montebello ceremony was one of several commemorations held across Southern California and around the globe, illustrating the region’s deep-rooted Armenian heritage and the collective resolve to preserve the memory of those lost. As the community gathered in Montebello, similar events took place throughout the area, including in front of the Turkish Embassy in Beverly Hills, each serving as a poignant reminder of the past and a call to continue the pursuit of justice. The Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument, located within Bicknell Park, stands as a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of the Armenian people. Each year, it serves as a focal point for reflection, education, and the reaffirmation of the commitment to never forget the atrocities of the past. This year, the monument was recognized as a cultural and historical landmark by the California State Legislature.
