'My father thinks that I am a disgrace' - Chris Eubank Jr. ahead of his grudge fight with Conor Benn
IBO world middleweight champion Chris Eubank has revealed his is “in pain” trying to make weight just two days before facing bitter rival Conor Benn at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but says it’s nothing compared to the agony he’s suffered in his personal life.
The two Brits clash in the 160lb middleweight division on Saturday in a non-title fight with Eubank Jr’s IBO world title not on the line but plenty of pride and ego at stake.
Welterweight Benn will have to step up two weight divisions in what the promoters are calling the “biggest fight in British boxing history” in financial terms.
But Eubank Jr, who operates best in the 168lb super-middleweight division, has agreed to a rehydration clause after Friday’s weigh-in allowing him to add ten pounds extra, about half of what he usually gains, before the fight or face a severe financial penalty running into millions of dollars.
Scientists say rehydration limits are dangerous and prevent a fighter from fully recovering and taking on enough food and water to protect himself from fatigue and the threat of brain damage.
But Eubank Jr relativised the pain he is currently suffering trying to make the weight by reminding the audience at Thursday’s final media conference that his brother, and fellow professional boxer Sebastian, suffered a heart attack and drowned aged 29 in Dubai in 2021, leaving behind a son,
while his legendary father, Chris Eubank Sr, has been absent from the entire build-up and calls him “a disgrace” for risking his health.
The clash reignites a family rivalry after his hall-of-fame father, fought Conor’s dad Nigel Benn in two epic middleweight world title battles in the early 1990s, with Eubank Sr winning in 1990 and the pair drawing in the 1993 rematch.
The original scheduled fight between their offspring in October 2022 – agreed at the even lower catchweight of 157lbs - was called off after Benn failed a voluntary drugs test, testing positive for female fertility drug clomifene.
This has only served to increase the animosity between the pair, with Eubank Jr saying in Thursday’s media conference it is his duty to “erase” Benn and his promoter Eddie Hearn, who pushed for the original fight to go ahead despite the failed test, from the boxing scene.
In February Eubank Jr slapped an egg in the face of Benn during a face off in the Manchester leg of the fight’s promotional tour, saying later that his opponent “deserved the embarrassment” and to “make sure that his cheating will never be forgotten.”
An independent report by the WBC in February 2023 said Benn's failed drugs test was not intentional and could have been caused by a "highly elevated consumption" of eggs.
He faced a two-year battle with anti-doping authorities, before his suspension was lifted in November.
UK Anti-Doping Agency announced it would not appeal against a decision from the National Anti-Doping Panel to lift his ban, with the British Boxing Board of Control also not appealing.
Benn has always denied intentionally doping and both fighters are being tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) for this contest.
