Israel's military on Thursday warned of a larger and even more intense assault on Gaza if the remaining hostages seized by Hamas were not released, as its air strikes killed at least 55 people in the war-torn enclave. General Eyal Zamir, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, visited troops in Gaza on Thursday, threatening to expand the offensive in Gaza if hostages seized by Hamas were not freed soon. He said the Israeli army will continue to exert military pressure on Hamas and strengthen its control over Hamas when necessary. Israel resumed its military assault on Gaza on March 18, after the collapse of a two-month ceasefire that had brought a brief respite to the Hamas-run territory. Gaza rescue teams and medics said Israeli air strikes killed at least 55 people on Thursday. An Israeli attack on an apartment building in the Strip's northern Gaza City killed 11 people, including at least one child. In another air strike, the Israeli army attacked a police station in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza, killing nine people. Since Israel resumed its military operations, 1,978 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, raising the overall death toll to 51,355 since the war began, according to Gaza-based health authorities.
