A newborn baby boy abandoned on a pickup truck was saved by villagers in Thailand.

The infant still had his umbilical cord attached when he was found on the cargo bed of the vehicle on Phuket island, on April 9.

The driver said he was about to go to work when he spotted the bundle of yellow and pink blankets lying on the back of the truck.

He parted the layers of cloth and was shocked to find the foundling alive and covered in dried-up bodily fluids.

Medics were called to the scene to rush the baby to the Thalang Hospital.

Footage shows them cradling the weakly crying newborn inside an ambulance.

Police Colonel Ekkarat Phlaiduang, Superintendent of the Cheang Thale Police Station, said: 'We arrived at the scene and found that the rescue team had alreay taken the baby to Thalang Hospital. He was later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital.'

The police officer added that the baby's condition has stabilised.

Investigations were ongoing to locate the boy's parents. However, the infant will remain in state care until they are found. If they are unable to return the baby, he will be put into the adoption system.
