Buddhist holiday! Dozens of monks ride escalator at airport
Dozens of monks were seen riding an escalator at an airport for their annual pilgrimage.
More than 100 Thai clerics were heading to the boarding gate at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, ahead of their departure.
Footage shows the monastic delegates wearing orange robes, lining up on the moving stairs with their carry-ons, on March 14.
The group was reported to be travelling to India and Nepal to visit the Four Holy Places of Buddhism — Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar.
The monks were selected by the Department of Religious Affairs, which chose representatives from every province across Thailand. All the participants are active in religious propagation and were chosen for their work in promoting Buddhism in their communities.
The government said that the pilgrimage aims to strengthen their understanding of Buddhist principles and reinforce ties between Thai Buddhism and its historical roots.
Buddhism is the dominant religion in Thailand, with the vast majority of Thais practising Theravada Buddhism. Monks play an integral role in Thai society, not only in spiritual matters but also in education, social services, and community leadership.
