In a remarkable natural phenomenon, two rare Rafflesia tuan-mudae corpse flowers have reached full bloom simultaneously within the Maninjau Nature Reserve in Indonesia.

Footage captured on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in the Marambuang forest of Baringin Village, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, shows conservation officers meticulously measuring the expansive petals and diameter of the blossoms.

According to the officers' records, the first flower is in its fourth day of perfect bloom, boasting a diameter of 82.5 centimeters. The second flower, in its second day of bloom, measures an even larger 91 centimeters across.

Ade Putra, Head of the Maninjau Conservation Resort Section II of the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), stated, "This simultaneous blooming of Rafflesia tuan-mudae is a global first, with no prior documentation in any scientific journals. While the simultaneous blooming of Rafflesia arnoldii has been observed before, this is unprecedented for the tuan-mudae species."

Notably, the same location previously hosted the world's largest recorded Rafflesia tuan-mudae, which measured an astonishing 111 centimeters in diameter.

According to Putra, Rafflesia tuan-mudae is one of the rarest among the approximately 30 Rafflesia species worldwide.

"There are only two known distributions of Rafflesia tuan-mudae globally. It was first discovered in Sarawak, Malaysia, and the second location is in Marambuang, Agam Regency, Indonesia," explained Putra.

In Indonesia, all Rafflesia species, often referred to as corpse flowers due to their pungent odor, are protected by law. **eNd
