A driver spent his life savings to buy his dream Ferrari - only for it to erupt in flames an hour later.

Honkon, 33, a music producer, saved up 43 million JPY (225,000 GBP) over a decade to splash out on a white Ferrari 458 Spider.

He took it out for a drive in Tokyo on April 16, eager to savour the fruits of his hard work, but it caught on fire while coasting along the Shuto Expressway.

Honkon immediately pulled over and called the local fire department. He watched helplessly as the flames engulfed the Ferrari, reducing it into a charred wreckage.

Speaking to local media, Honkon said: 'When I was checking to turn left, I noticed white smoke coming out.

'The person in the car next to me looked like he was ok, so I thought maybe it was me.

'I was looking forward to this day because I had diligently saved money for years, then this happens.'

Despite the loss, Honkon said he was grateful to still be alive.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police said no other cars were affected by the fire, believed to have started in the engine compartment. The exact cause was under investigation, they said.

Honkon is now in negotiations with his insurance company.
