Giant panda startled by sudden appearance of her caretaker in hilarious footage
On March 21, at Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, animal caretaker Chen Liangjin was preparing to escort "Meizhu" the giant panda back indoors as usual. While picking up a fallen bamboo leaf bowl, Chen stood up just as Meizhu was turning her head. Startled by Chen’s sudden appearance, the panda reacted dramatically, which in turn surprised the caretaker, causing him to stumble backward — much to the delight and laughter of nearby visitors.
Afterward, Chen explained that he has spent every day with Meizhu and had never seen her react so strongly before, calling the incident a rare coincidence. Meizhu is in good health and has shown no signs of stress from the scare.
Meizhu, a female giant panda, was born on June 18, 2024, at Chimelong Safari Park and is the daughter of "Mengmeng," the eldest of the world's only panda triplets. Since birth, Meizhu has been showered with affection and is affectionately known as the "Guangzhou Princess."
As a senior caretaker with 16 years of experience, Chen Liangjin's daily interactions with Meizhu have long been a highlight for visitors. He is skilled at reading the panda's moods through her sounds and movements and often communicates with her in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
