The Haoe Lead Fire scorched more than 3,000 acres in North Carolina after burning for over 11 days.

The fire was burning in the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness Area in the Nantahala National Forest, around seven miles west of Robbinsville in Graham County.

As of Thursday morning, April 24, officials reported that the blaze had reached 3,103 acres with 57 per cent containment.

Adam Rondeau, a spokesman for the Forest Service, confirmed that the fire had not harmed the historic poplar trees in the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, some of which are over 400 years old.

The fire remains entirely on National Forest System lands. No private properties or structures are at risk, and there are no evacuations in place or expected.

Much of the affected area is part of the burn scar from the 2016 Maple Springs Fire, which consumed nearly 8,000 acres.

Authorities said the Haoe Lead Fire began on April 12 from a lightning strike.
