A mystery unfolded after a silo full of raw sewage ruptured, flooding a treatment plant.

Footage shows workers fleeing for their lives as a silo full of raw sewage collapsed in Istanbul, Turkey.

The terrifying incident created a wall of waste that engulfed at least one of them before he had the chance to run on April 24.

Upon witnessing the disaster, employees scrambled to contain the faecal matter and prevent it from seeping into a nearby stream and contaminating the water.

Local media reports said that five people were injured in the incident.

Turkish Ministry of Health said in a statement: 'In the explosion that occurred in the treatment facility in Tuzla Organised Industrial Zone, five of our citizens were injured, one seriously.'

Medical teams and the police were dispatched to the scene, with the injured taken to the hospital.

Fire crews are working to clean up the area, with the Ministry of the Environment launching an investigation into the incident.

The ministry said: 'Following the collapse of the silo where the sludge was stored in the treatment facility of the Organised Industrial Zone in Tuzla, our Ministry's Provincial Directorate teams were immediately directed to the area.

'Necessary measures are being taken to prevent the waste from spreading from the silo and mixing with the stream bed in the area. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident.'

A police investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.
