PALESTINIAN MAN SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic)HEBRON, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - APRIL 28: Israeli forces raided the town of Idhna, west of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, on Monday, April 28, demolishing 5 Palestinian homes over alleged lack of building permits amid ongoing military escalation, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Fuad al-Jiyawi, a local resident, told that Israeli military bulldozers demolished a two-apartment house measuring 300 square meters, where eight people lived. The property belonged to brothers Iyad and Khalil Naim al-Jiyawi. He added that Israeli forces also tore down two under-construction houses, each 150 square meters in size, belonging to brothers Mohammed and Osama Yusuf al-Jiyawi, as well as another building under construction owned by Nidal al-Jiyawi. According to a monthly report published by the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, Israel carried out 58 demolition operations in March across the West Bank, destroying 87 Palestinian-owned homes and structures. Israel widely uses the pretext of a lack of construction permits to demolish Palestinian homes, especially in Area C in the occupied West Bank, which is under Israel’s administrative and security control, and constitutes around 60% of the West Bank. Under the 1995 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, was divided into three portions – Area A, B, and C. The Israeli authorities maintain a policy of demolishing the homes of Palestinians accused of attacking Israeli soldiers and illegal settlers, a practice widely condemned as a form of collective punishment prohibited under international law, as it often displaces entire families. Nearly 960 Palestinians have been killed and over 7,000 others injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, according to Palestinian figures. Last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land illegal and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
