US: U.S. tariff policy stokes growing fears of economic recession
The Trump administration's tariff policy has ignited widespread fears of a looming economic recession, U.S. agencies reported. A poll by ABC News, The Washington Post, and Ipsos revealed that 72 percent of participants believe Trump's economic policies will trigger a short-term recession, according to Ipsos' website on Monday. U.S. media reports also show that the tariff policy has already dampened economic activity across the United States. Moody's has revised its 2025 outlook for U.S. ports to negative from stable, attributing the change to escalating economic uncertainties, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. The Journal also warned last Friday that "there could be empty shelves in U.S. stores in a few weeks". Economic experts have criticized the Trump administration's unilateral approach, saying it defies economic common sense and risks causing harm both domestically and internationally. Gary Cohn, former director of White House National Economic Council, said in a CBS show on Sunday that U.S. shoppers will feel the tariffs' effects in the last couple weeks of May, as consumers are already reducing consumption or spending ahead of price increases. Zanny Minton Beddoes, the Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, said the tariffs will affect consumers, potentially push the U.S. economy into recession, and more importantly, erode investor confidence in the dollar.
