Feral locals living in mountain of trash at landfill site shocks visitor
A visitor was left stunned when she passed by a mountain of trash at a landfill site and discovered huts where feral locals live.
Marianne Mitsuyi had been travelling through the area with friends when the tuktuk passed by a towering heap of garbage in Davao City, the Philippines.
Footage shows the large mounds of rubbish raised like hills with makeshift houses scattered across the landscape.
The houses were made from scrap wood, tarpaulins, and discarded materials, built on the side of the road.
Marianne said: 'It was my first time seeing a sanitary landfill.
'As we were passing by, I couldn't help but take some videos. I was amazed to see the mountain of trash. It looked like snow from afar.
'It's not my intention to criticise the political governance of the city or tarnish its image. My reaction came purely from curiosity, astonishment, and sadness.
The traveller added the thick smell of rotten waste filled the air.
She said: 'I was shocked to see that many people live across from, beside, and near the garbage mountain.'
The group passed by the New Carmen Landfill on April 21. The facility was ordered to stop operation in 2019 after reaching its capacity limit.
