This is the spectacular moment Mount Lewotobi spewed lava during an eruption in Indonesia.

Footage shows the volcano gushing bright orange molten material that scorched its slopes on Flores island, at 9:15 pm local time on April 27.

Flashes of volcanic lightning sparked near the peak as villagers watched the magmatic eruption, which they said was accompanied by a loud bang.

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said Mount Lewotobi sent a 13,000ft (4,000m) ash plume into the sky.

Volcano observer Herman Yosef Mboro said: 'The community should remain calm and follow the directions of the local government and not believe issues that have unclear sources. The community around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is aware of the potential for rain lava floods in rivers that originate at the peak.

'If there is high-intensity rain, especially in the areas of Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, Nawakote, communities affected by ash rain from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki should wear masks or facial covers to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash on the respiratory system.'

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki last previously erupted on March 20, disrupting travel across tourist island Bali around 500 kilometres away.

It is located on Flores Island, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its high seismic and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates.
