Baby camel born at Woburn Safari Park in England
A healthy baby camel was born at Woburn Safari Park in England, marking the first Bactrian camel birth at the park in three years.
The male calf was born on April 22 to parents Rita and Khan. Keepers reported that the newborn quickly stood up on his feet and is often seen staying close to his attentive mother.
With the new arrival, the park is now home to eight Bactrian camels, three females and five males.
Rita and Khan also welcomed a male calf named Walter in 2022. Khan, the breeding male of the group, has fathered several calves, including Ump and Wednesday.
When Rita gave birth for the first time in 2022, she required some additional support from keepers. This time, however, she has displayed strong maternal instincts and is confidently caring for her new calf.
Tom Robson, Head of Reserves, said: 'We're really delighted to welcome a male camel calf to the herd at Woburn Safari Park this month. This is Rita's second calf, with her first born three years ago, so this is a truly special moment for the keepers, the park, and the entire herd.
'Rita has been an attentive mum, staying close to her little one as he begins to explore his surroundings in the large camel paddock, alongside his brother Walter, dad Khan, and the rest of the herd.'
The camels at Woburn are part of a domesticated species listed as 'Least Concern' although their wild relatives are critically endangered due to threats in their natural habitats.
The Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) is a species of camel with two humps on its back, unlike the single-humped dromedary camel.
