MS-21 LANDING IRKUTSK, RUSSIA (RELEASED ON APRIL 29, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “ROSTEC” AND "RUSSIAN UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION" HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO --EDITORIAL USE ONLY)A prototype of Russia's MS-21 medium-haul passenger aircraft, equipped with domestically produced systems, successfully completed its maiden flight, marking a key step in the country's efforts to reduce reliance on foreign aviation technology, according to statement by Russian state-owned company Rostec on Tuesday, Apr. 29. The aircraft took off from the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, operated by Yakovlev (a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation under Rostec State Corporation), and conducted a 1-hour and 15-minute test flight, reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters and a speed of 580 km/h, the statement said. During the flight, Russian-made avionics, power supply systems, and air conditioning systems were tested. The MS-21 is undergoing modifications to replace previously imported components as part of Russia's import substitution program. "This flight initiates factory development tests for the MS-21 in its new, fully Russian configuration,"* said Vadim Badekha, CEO of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). He added that the aircraft will later be transferred to Zhukovsky for certification trials. Another fully Russian variant is in final assembly and will join test flights in the near future. Two modified prototypes will participate in the testing program. The aircraft that flew on April 29 has been updated with Russian-made avionics, navigation systems, an auxiliary power unit, and other critical components. In total, 80 foreign systems have been replaced with domestic alternatives to ensure independence from foreign suppliers, Rostec added.
