Christian and socialist labor unions organized the 24-hour action in response to the federal government’s austerity measures, which include cuts to unemployment benefits, pensions and other social programs. The strike caused major disruptions across both the public and private sectors, halting many services throughout the country. Among the most affected were airport operations, where striking security and baggage personnel severely impacted air travel. Unions called for the government to reconsider its planned reductions, warning that the austerity package would disproportionately harm workers and vulnerable groups.
