North Vietnam emerged victorious, and the nation was reunified following the fall of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) on April 30, 1975. The United States reports more than five million bombs were dropped between 1964 and 1973, leaving Vietnam heavily contaminated. Since the war's end, over 100,000 people have been killed or injured in incidents involving explosive ordnance. Since 1999, the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) has detected and safely removed nearly 400,000 explosive devices and cleared about 300 million square meters of land. Quang Binh Province remains one of the worst-affected areas, where MAG continues demining efforts. Raising awareness and educating locals on how to identify and respond to hazards is a critical part of MAG’s mission. On the war’s 50th anniversary, deminers are still working to eliminate the conflict’s lingering dangers and restore community safety.
