RELEASED DETAINEE, SAMIR ABU GANIM, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic)DEIR AL-BALAH, GAZA, PALESTINE - APRIL 29, 2025: Israel released a Palestinian Red Crescent medical worker Assad Al-Nasasra, the survivor of the March 23 attack in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, which killed 14 aid workers. Al-Nasasra, detained for 37 days, is among 10 Gazans freed by Israeli authorities, according to a video statement shared by the Palestinian Red Crescent on social media. Al-Nasasra was part of a team dispatched to aid the wounded in Rafah’s Tel al-Sultan area when Israeli forces attacked, killing 14 aid workers, including eight Palestinian Red Crescent members, five civil defense team members, and one United Nations employee. Some victims were found with bound hands, shot in the head and chest, one decapitated, and others dismembered and buried in a deep pit. Al-Nasasra, who survived, was taken into custody by Israeli soldiers. On April 1, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar justified the strike, claiming the targeted ambulance was a suspicious vehicle that ignored warnings and lacked emergency lights. He alleged nine of those killed were Hamas and Islamic Jihad members, including one linked to the October 7 attacks. Palestinian authorities said that video footage showing the execution of paramedics and aid workers in Rafah, southern Gaza, refutes Israeli forces' claims that ambulances were not randomly targeted. In an official statement, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said a video posted by an American newspaper documenting the deliberate execution of the emergency and relief workers in March disproves Israeli claims that it did not randomly attack ambulances or recognize them due to a lack of lights or emergency signals.
