US REPRESENTATIVE MAXWELL FROST SPEAKINGWASHINGTON DC, US - APRIL 29: US Senators Bernie Sanders and Chris Van Hollen, along with several Representatives, held a press conference in front of the State Department on Tuesday, April 29 calling for the release of Mohsen Mahdawi. Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident and former student protest organizer at Columbia University, was reportedly taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office in Vermont. Lawmakers also demanded the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral student at Tufts University, who was arrested by ICE agents in Massachusetts on March 25. Her detention followed her co-authorship of an op-ed about the Israel-Palestine conflict published in the university's student newspaper last year.
