An Australian tourist was arrested for performing a risky wheelie while riding a rented motorbike in Thailand.

Daher Walid, 32, drove his motorcycle with one wheel in the air on the holiday island Phuket, on April 27.

Footage shows the reckless Aussie revving across the pavement while pulling the dangerous stunt next to other riders along Wiset Road.

Police launched an investigation after footage emerged of the tourist allegedly violating traffic laws.

They identified Daher and summoned him and the motorcycle owner to the Chalong District Police Station.

Station superintendent Police Colonel Rungrit Rattanaphakdi said: 'We seized the vehicle and handed it over to the inquiry officer for further legal action.

‘We charged the tourist with driving without regard for the safety or inconvenience of others and driving recklessly or in a manner likely to cause fear, without regard for the safety of persons or property.'

The once-pristine island of Phuket has been marred by over-tourism as the Thai government implements a visa-free scheme to boost revenue following the barren pandemic years.

The island saw 800,000 foreign visitors last year alone.

However, angry locals claim the push for tourist dollars has attracted crowds of 'low-quality' visitors from Russia, India and Australia.
