Road blocked by huge piles of garbage in southern Thailand
A road blocked by huge piles of garbage caused a traffic jam in southern Thailand.
Piles of trash nearly obstructed the entire motorway in Hat Yai District, Songkhla, as poor waste management led to the overflowing garbage.
Footage shows a motorist carefully navigating through the debris while some residents rummaged through the piles to collect reusable items on April 24.
The filmer said that the situation had worsened over the past three months, with the road situated near a landfill where garbage trucks frequently dispose of waste.
She added: 'The situation has worsened over the past three months because the road is near the landfill where garbage trucks regularly dump waste. However, the poor waste management has led to the garbage piling up even more, overflowing onto the area.'
Local media reported that the strong, foul odour emanating from the trash has become unbearable. The garbage has also attracted various animals that are now living among the refuse, further compounding the problem.
The urbanized municipality of Songkhla generates an estimated 34,805 tons of solid waste annually.
The local government manages the collection of approximately 33,185 tons of waste per year, leaving around 1,343 tons unaddressed annually.
However, due to inadequate waste processing facilities, improper sorting, and inconsistent waste collection services, large volumes of trash often accumulate on the streets, causing severe disruptions to daily life.
