Tourist rampages through supermarket smashing bottles of red wine on ground
A Belgian tourist was arrested for smashing bottles of red wine during a supermarket rampage in Thailand.
Mustafa, 25, barged into the 7-Eleven store in 'Sin City' Pattaya and doused his bald head with a can of soft drinks he plucked from a refrigerator.
He then allegedly hurled bottles of wine from the shelves onto the floor, sparking alarm among the staff.
Disturbing footage shows the deranged holidaymaker smiling as he swats the liquor bottles to the ground, with frantic staff trying desperately to stop him.
However, he continued his rampage, littering the floor with red wine and shattered glass shards.
Police arrived at the store after receiving a report at 4 am on April 27. They detained the Belgian man and hauled him to the Bang Lamung district station.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Suchart Dusdee, a police inspector at the Pattaya City Police Station, said: 'Mr Mustafa was charged with being drunk and disorderly. He was taken to a detention cell to sober up.
'Once he had calmed down, Mr Mustafa agreed to pay the convenience store 35,000 baht (780 GBP), and the store chose not to press charges.
'The matter was peacefully resolved with an agreement between both parties in the presence of the investigator.'
Furious locals blamed the Thai government's free visa scheme for the influx of 'low-quality' visitors to Thailand. Ministers are desperate to keep up the number of arrivals due to the revenue they bring.
However, cases of violence - often fuelled by drink and drugs - have exploded.
Pattaya and Phuket, two of the most tourist-centric destinations, have often borne the brunt of the misbehaviour.
Pattaya became popular with American troops on 'rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1950s and 1960s when the U.S. military had bases in Thailand while fighting Communism in Vietnam. Rural families are said to have even dressed their sons as women to cash in on the gold rush.
The handful of bars in the coastal town quickly grew and it is now the world's biggest sex holiday destination, with round-the-clock prostitution and drugs - a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah rife with crime and debauchery.
Government chiefs have attempted to clean up the city but regular violence, depravity and claims of corruption continue to blight its reputation.
