A soldier was killed when a military helicopter crashed in Colombia.

The aircraft had taken off and was trying to gain altitude when it lost control and plunged into a lake in Malagana, Bolivar, on Tuesday morning, April 29.

Authorities said: 'It was carrying out a supply mission to units deployed in the Montes de Maria region.'

Dramatic footage shows the helicopter taking off from the Command Post of the 13th Marine Infantry Battalion as other marines watch the craft. The next clip reveals it fell into the waters.

Colleagues immediately rushed to the scene to help the four occupants.

Warrant Officer Yordi Steven Carvajal Rodriguez was transported to the hospital in Mahates but succumbed to his injuries minutes later.

An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network stated: 'An Armada Nacional de Colombia Bell 412EP crashed into a lake, shortly after takeoff from Batallon de Infanteria de Marina No. 13, Malagana, Bolivar.

'One of the four occupants perished and three were injured and the helicopter received substantial damage.'

The Colombian Navy expressed their grief over the loss of the officer, who had served for more than 13 years.

They said: 'Today, the sky is covered in navy blue to welcome S2 Yordy Steven Carvajal Rodriguez. He was not only a national hero committed to his mission, but also a man of integrity, courage, and passion for serving Colombia from the skies.

'There are no words that can fill the void he leaves behind, but there is one certainty: his memory will live forever in our skies and in the heart of the Colombian Navy.'

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
