ODD SHOE HANGING ON LINEDEIR AL-BALAH, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - APR. 29: A Palestinian father who lost most of his family in an Israeli airstrike continues to find solace in the remaining clothes and toys of his deceased children. Firas Wishah lost three of his five children, his mother, and several relatives when his home in the Bureij Refugee Camp in central Gaza was destroyed during an Israeli attack on Nov. 2, 2023. He and his wife were both injured in the strike. "My brother’s daughter lives with us. She thinks I’m her father, and my wife is her mother. She calls us that," Wishah said. The bereaved father often searches the rubble of his destroyed home for mementos. He hangs recovered toys on a clothesline, both to soothe his grief and, he says, to send a message to Israeli aircraft above: that they are killing children.
