So cute!! Earth Day Surprise: Baby Bison Joins the Bronx Zoo Herd!
Look what arrived just in time for Earth Day! On April 22, the Bronx Zoo welcomed its first American bison calf of the season—a perfect way to celebrate our planet and the species we share it with.
In this heartwarming video, the proud new mother bonds with her calf in a quiet moment away from the herd. Bison moms are known to be especially protective in the early days, which is why animal care staff gently perform a neonatal exam shortly after birth. This includes a health check, vaccinations, and tagging for future herd identification.
The newest addition is easy to spot thanks to its orange-red coat—giving young calves the endearing nickname “red dogs.” Be sure to swing by the bison exhibit on your next visit and see if you can spot this adorable newcomer blending in with the herd!
