A key conflict of the Cold War (1947-1989), alongside the Korean War (1950-1953), the Vietnam War caused the US, involved from 1963 to 1973, losing around 60,000 soldiers before withdrawing. Vietnam, was divided into North and South republics in 1955, unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976. April 30, Liberation and Unification Day, is commemorated annually in Vietnam, a Southeast Asian nation of roughly 100 million, honoring the historic milestone.
