JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 1, 2025: Thousands of workers affiliated with the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) took to the streets of Johannesburg on Thursday, May 1, in a protest march marking International Workers’ Day. Participants gathered to voice demands for better labor rights, job security and improved working conditions, aligning their cause with global calls for workers’ rights. In a display of international solidarity, some participants waved Palestinian flags, expressing support for the people of Gaza amid ongoing Israeli genocide in the blockaded enclave. May 1, observed worldwide as International Workers’ Day or Labor Day, commemorates the historic struggle for workers’ rights, including the eight-hour workday. The date traces its origins to the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where labor protests turned violent. Writing by Aleyna Cil
