Sudden hailstorm turns streets into rivers of ice in central China
On the afternoon of April 30, a sudden hailstorm hit Qingchuan County in Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, covering some streets in white and causing accumulated hail to form what appeared to be an “ice river.”
A resident of Qiaozhuang Town reported that the hail began abruptly around 5:45 p.m., with some hailstones as large as glutinous rice balls. Several flowerpots placed outdoors were smashed. “It was coming down hard—everything turned white, and the hail piled up like a river,” the resident said. “I’ve lived for decades and never seen anything like it.”
On May 1, a staff member from the Qingchuan County government office said that although the hailstorm was intense, it ended quickly, and road traffic has since returned to normal.
According to the county's emergency management bureau, initial assessments show damage to farmland and commercial crops, though the exact affected area and crop types are still being verified by agricultural authorities. Some tiled roofs and awnings were also damaged, but no casualties have been reported.
