China: China powers ahead with rapid expansion of EV charging network
Storyline: China powers ahead with rapid expansion of EV charging network [Voice_over] During the five-day May Day holiday in China, residents are expected to hit the roads in large numbers, many of them in electric vehicles. Topping up and refueling those cars shouldn't be a problem, with the roughly 38,000 charging piles that cover 98 percent of the country's national highway network. To ensure everything works properly during the peak travel holiday, the country's National Energy Administration announced a series of measures to be taken at regional levels. [Sound_bite] Zhang Xing, Spokesman, National Energy Administration (NEA): "They are increasing the number of on-duty staff, ensuring early inspection and maintenance of equipment, and strengthening monitoring through digital platforms to guarantee that charging services during the May Day holiday will operate in a smooth, orderly, safe, reliable, regulated, and efficient manner." [Voice_over] China's new energy vehicle charging infrastructure is some of the most developed in the world with roughly 97 percent of its county-level regions now offering the service. Recent data from the NEA shows that by the end of March this year, there were more than 13.7 million charging piles in the country, a 47 percent increase from last year. [Sound_bite] Zhang Xing, Spokesman, National Energy Administration (NEA): "All provincial-level regions in the Chinese mainland, except for the Xizang Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, have achieved the goal of installing charging stations in all county-level regions, with the nationwide coverage rate of charging facilities reaching 97.31 percent." [Voice_over] Data from the NEA shows that, of those 13 million charging piles, 3.9 million of them are public. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
