Hotel fire kills at least four people in India
A fire at a hotel in India killed at least four people and injured seven others.
The blaze broke out at the Naz Hotel in Diggi Bazaar, Ajmer, Rajasthan, on Thursday, May 1, reportedly due to a suspected short circuit in an air conditioning unit.
A couple and their four-year-old child were reportedly burned alive in the incident.
District Collector Lok Bondhu said: 'The fire broke out on the first floor and quickly spread to the fifth floor. Since the hotel was located in a narrow lane, it was difficult for officials to reach the top floors and rescue people.'
Several guests reportedly jumped from the structure to escape the flames.
One witness said: 'A woman threw her child from the window into my lap. She also tried to jump from the building, but we stopped her.'
The injured were taken to JLN Government Medical College Hospital.
The hospital's principal, Dr. Anil Samaria, stated: 'Nine people were brought to the hospital. Four were dead, while five others are in serious condition. One of them sustained 100 per cent burn injuries, while the others had burns covering 50 to 60 per cent of their bodies.'
Footage shows a chaotic scene in the area, with an emergency responder carrying an injured child, who was still alive, out of the burning building.
Authorities said it took three hours to bring the blaze under control. An investigation is underway.
