A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck 218 kilometers south of Puerto Williams on May 2, 2025, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, triggering a tsunami alert across Chile’s Magallanes region, including the city of Punta Arenas.
Footage shows a calm and orderly evacuation in Punta Arenas, with residents moving swiftly to higher ground. Authorities credit the composed response to Chile’s extensive investment in disaster preparedness following the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that claimed over 500 lives.
Chile’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) warned that tsunami waves could reach coastal areas within hours, prompting swift action across southern cities. The quake's tremors were also felt in southern Argentina, notably in Ushuaia, located just over 200 kilometers from the epicenter—underscoring the region’s seismic risks along the South American and Scotia tectonic plate boundary.
