A selfish driver who stopped in the middle of a highway to try and make a missed turn ended up causing a horror crash.

CCTV footage shows the red subcompact SUV coming to a stop in the middle of a three-lane road to move into the exit lane on Interstate 71 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A white and a black hatchback can be seen halting behind the stationary vehicle on April 30.

Moments later, a speeding grey family van ploughed into the back of the queue, causing a domino-effect collision on the interstate.

The white car spun from the impact, damaging both its front and rear ends.

After the crash, the red SUV driver seized the opportunity to cut across the two-lane exit and drive away as if nothing had happened.

Meanwhile, passing vehicles pulled over to check on the crash victims.

Paramedics reportedly arrived and transported the occupants of the three vehicles to a hospital. No serious injuries were reported.

The identity and whereabouts of the driver remain unknown, and police began searching for them.

Ohio Department of Transportation Press Secretary Matt Bruning said: 'What this driver did is extremely dangerous and the absolute worst thing you could do.'

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said more than 50 per cent of highway crashes in the US are caused by aggressive or reckless driving, including sudden lane changes and illegal stops.
