A violent hailstorm blanketed the streets of Paris with chunks of ice.

Dramatic footage shows hail pellets rapidly accumulating and covering the ground amid a heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon, May 3.

Local media reported that several metro stations were forced to close due to sudden flooding.

The freak weather was caused by a low-pressure system moving across France and Portugal, which triggered the extraordinary storm.

Hailstones form when raindrops are carried by thunderstorm updrafts into freezing areas of the atmosphere. As they rise, they freeze and grow by colliding with other raindrops that freeze onto them. This can also occur during spring and summer thunderstorms.
