A phone exploded under a man's bed while he was sleeping.

Pablo Moura, 18, suffered minor burns when his Xiaomi Poco F3 device blasted beneath his pillow in Campo Grande, Brazil.

Sensing the heat from the burning gadget, Pablo frantically fled his room as flames engulfed the foam mattress on April 27.

Luna Staab, his brother, recalled that their mother heard the noise of the explosion and rushed to help them contain the blaze.

He said: 'My brother came out scared, running, and knocked on her door saying that his phone was on fire. When my mum got there, the mattress was already burned. A lot of smoke came out of the room — it had a toxic smell.'

The quick-thinking family then immediately extinguished the flames and removed the device out from the house.

Footage shows the fully burned smartphone, soaking wet on the ground.

Pablo can be seen inspecting the faulty device and repeatedly prodding it with a black basin.

The victim reportedly did not sustain any serious injuries in the explosion.

Luna added: 'The cell phone was next to him in bed. It burned his finger, and the heat reached his head. It didn't hurt badly, but it did burn.'

The odor from the phone's burning lithium-ion battery released acrid chemical smoke, forcing the siblings to temporarily leave their rooms.

The family speculated that the phone overheated, causing it to explode despite not being plugged in at the time.

In a separate incident, an eight-year-old girl died after her Xioami Redmi Note 5 Pro exploded in her hand in India. Police reported that the device overheated leading to the explosion.

Xiaomi is a Chinese multinational technology company specialising in consumer electronics, software, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Authorities suggest that phones can overheat due to several reasons, such as heavy usage, high ambient temperature, or poor ventilation. The heat can be sufficient to cause the battery to fail and lead to a blast, even if the device is not plugged in.
