San Juan, Argentina - May 02, 2025 The Vicuña mining company, a joint venture formed equally by Canada's Lundin Mining and Australia's BHP, confirmed this Monday that the integrated Filo del Sol (video) and Josemaría projects, located on the border between Argentina and Chile, are among the top ten districts in the world for copper mineral resources, according to a new resource assessment. According to a statement released by the company, "the new resource assessment at Filo del Sol and Josemaría consolidates the project's position as one of the largest copper, gold, and silver deposits in the world." Filo del Sol and Josemaría are located in the Argentine province of San Juan, in the west of the country, although part of Filo del Sol extends into Chile's Atacama region. The first deposit is in the exploration stage, while the second is in the pre-construction phase. The strategic agreement, the statement says, “seeks to leverage the synergies between the Filo del Sol and Josemaría deposits, which are located in close proximity, to optimize shared infrastructure and enable phased expansions.” Together, the deposits contain 12.8 million tonnes of measured copper and 25.1 million tonnes of inferred gold, plus 32.2 million ounces of measured gold and 48.7 million ounces of inferred gold, and 659 million ounces of measured silver and 808 million ounces of inferred gold. According to the company, the majority of these resources come from the Filo del Sol deposit.
