MASSIVE BLACK SMOKE RISING BEHIND BUILDINGS PORT SUDAN, SUDAN - MAY 6: Explosions and fires were reported early Tuesday, May 6, at the Southern Port in Port Sudan, located in eastern Sudan and serving as the country’s current administrative hub. According to local sources, a series of loud explosions were heard in the area, followed by fires breaking out at the port. Preliminary assessments suggest that the fires may have been triggered by an attack targeting a fuel depot at the site. The Southern Port had recently received humanitarian aid delivered by Türkiye-based Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH). The aid materials were reportedly being stored at the port at the time of the incident. In a separate development, Port Sudan International Airport also came under attack, according to local media reports. All flight operations have been suspended as a result. No casualties have been confirmed so far, and Sudanese authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding either incident. Port Sudan has served as the de facto administrative capital of Sudan since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, following clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which rendered the capital Khartoum largely inoperative.
