Furious tourist 'attacks locals in road rage' incident in Thailand
A furious tourist was seen attacking a local during a road rage incident in Thailand.
Footage shows the man walking over to a car behind a white sedan and shouting at the motorist inside in Phuket on May 4.
He slapped the person through the driver's side window before walking away. The visitor continued to scream at the vehicle before driving away.
Later that day, another road user, Wisith Rodwichit, 47, filed a complaint at Patong Police Station against the same foreigner for harassing him.
Wisith provided video evidence to officers showing how the white Toyota suddenly braked and reversed at his front until the two cars crashed.
He said: 'I was driving when a white Toyota sedan overtook me and braked. He did that so I would crash into his vehicle.
'I stopped in time, but he kept provoking a collision. He lowered his window and made aggressive hand gestures at me until we reached near an intersection.
'I tried to follow him after that, but he did not stop.'
The driver who was allegedly physically assaulted has not yet come forward to the station.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Rapeepan Chumtham of Patong Police Station said: ‘We are reviewing the security camera footage to track down the perpetrator, but there has been no progress yet.
‘We also could not contact the person who rented out the vehicle involved, as their phone number was not in our database.
‘As of now, we still do not know the identity or origin of the foreign national.'
The once-pristine island of Phuket has been marred by over-tourism as the Thai government implements a visa-free scheme to boost revenue following the barren pandemic years.
The island saw 800,000 foreign visitors last year alone.
Angry locals claim the push for tourist dollars has attracted crowds of rowdy visitors. There are also concerns that the island has become an enclave of criminal activity, with police unable to control street fights and more organised ruffians setting up rackets among local businesses.
Phuket officials said they are implementing tighter immigration controls and screening processes amid a wave of drug-related crimes and illegal activities on the island.
