Dozens of homes were damaged by a powerful tornado in Indonesia, forcing nearly a hundred residents to evacuate.

Three villages were struck by the freak weather phenomenon in Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo Province, on Monday, May 5, around 2 pm.

A total of 93 houses were affected in Telaga Biru District, including 33 in Ulapato A, 20 in Timuato, and 40 in East Pentadio.

Authorities reported that the area had been hit by heavy rain and strong winds roughly an hour before the whirlwind touched down.

Dramatic footage captures the chaotic scene as the tornado hits, tearing off roofs and sending debris into the air, while locals can be heard shouting in fear.

Telaga Biru sub-district head Muchtar Potutu confirmed there were no casualties.

He added: 'On average, those who were evacuated had homes that were badly damaged and uninhabitable due to roof destruction.'

'Currently, they are being sheltered in BPBD tents, while others have taken refuge with family members whose homes were not affected. According to the latest data, 81 people have been evacuated.'

Local, sub-district, and village governments are now working with the Gorontalo Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to set up emergency tents and public kitchens in each affected village to provide food and basic needs.

Officials advised the public to remain alert as further storms may occur.
