Vienna, Austria - May 06, 2025 [WARNING: violent content] Vienna Zoo is celebrating International Chameleon Day on May 9, 2025, to highlight these fascinating reptiles. Known for their color-changing abilities, independently moving eyes, and unique tongues, chameleons are a symbol of adaptability in the animal kingdom. To mark the occasion, the zoo will set up an information corner and a craft booth in the ORANG.erie. Visitors can decorate chameleon masks, design pin badges, and learn about the various chameleon species. A special highlight this year is the exhibition of chameleons that were previously confiscated and brought to the zoo for care. Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, Zoo Director, shared, "We are particularly pleased to introduce our visitors to several critically endangered chameleon species, some of which have been bred successfully in our conservation house." Chameleons are incredibly diverse, with over 200 species worldwide. Some, like the Nguru dwarf chameleon, grow only a few centimeters, while others can exceed half a meter. Their habitats range from low-lying rainforests to desert regions. Sadly, around a third of all chameleon species are endangered, primarily due to habitat destruction, global warming, and illegal trade. "All nine species we keep here were confiscated from illegal trade," said Anton Weissenbacher, zoological curator. "These reptiles are highly sought after on the illegal pet market, but keeping them is challenging."
