SHOTLIST: KANO, NIGERIA (MAY 6, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF MOBILITY AIDS WORKSHOP IN KANO, NIGERIA 2. AMINU AHMED, FOUNDER OF WORKSHOP, SPEAKING TO REPORTERKANO, NIGERIA - MAY 6: In Nigeria’s northern city of Kano, people with physical disabilities are building their own mobility aids — including wheelchairs, tricycles, and motorcycles — at a workshop founded by a man who understands their struggle firsthand. Aminu Ahmed, 60, who has lived with a walking disability since childhood due to polio, established the workshop to support others with similar challenges. Drawing on his personal experience, Ahmed’s initiative offers both vocational training and employment opportunities. Currently, 10 trainees are learning how to design and build mobility equipment. Nearly 100 others have graduated from the program and launched their own businesses. Many come from across Kano, hoping to gain both skills and independence. Products from the workshop range in price from 100,000 to 200,000 naira (roughly $250 to $500), and buyers often express surprise at the high quality of the locally made items. Despite the success, the workshop struggles with limited access to machinery and funding. Still, Ahmed remains determined to grow the project and continue empowering the disabled community in Kano.
