Revellers injured when lightning strikes festival in Thailand
Revellers were injured when lightning struck during a festival in Thailand.
The locals were celebrating the yearly Rocket Festival at the Wat Rattananetaram temple when a freak lightning bolt hit the venue during a storm in Prachinburi, on May 4.
Footage shows villagers dancing out in the open before a sharp crackle echoed throughout the temple grounds.
Medics arrived at around 2 pm after being notified that two women, named by officers as Orapin Seesongcram and mother-of-two Orawan Banditnok, 35, were struck by lightning. They were rushed to the Nadi Hospital and have since been discharged.
Orawan's husband Somkhuan Rueangnongyan, 37, said: 'My wife was travelling with a band to play songs for the Rocket Festival. She had brought along our two children, who are nine and two.
'Before the incident, she was next to the concert stage putting our youngest son to sleep. Suddenly, the lightning struck near her. She was electrocuted and fell unconscious. I was terrified that I would lose her.'
The shaken husband said that Orawan suffered injuries to her shoulders and was in stable condition while being monitored at the hospital.
The other injured local, Orapin, was discharged after being treated for minor injuries. She later posted selfie videos on her social media dancing during the evening concert.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are nearing their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful thunderstorms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
