On May 5 in Meishan, Sichuan, a woman attracted dozens of butterflies to dance around her by tying a folded piece of white paper to the end of a wooden stick and waving it through the air in her vegetable garden.

Zhao Li, director of the Huaxi Insect Museum, explained that butterflies have relatively weak vision and may have mistaken the white paper for a fellow butterfly or a potential mate, prompting them to follow it. Since butterflies are social creatures, the actions of a few individuals can trigger group behaviour, leading to a large gathering.
