Britain's oldest shopkeeper says that he "doesn't think" he will ever retire
Britain's oldest shopkeeper says he "doesn't think" he will ever retire despite being aged 100 and having run his own business for more than 70 years. "
Arthur Ferguson opened Ferguson's Shop in Millom, Cumbria, in the 1950s and still works around six days a week helping customers at the store.
The shop sells school uniform, made-to-measure blinds and curtains, bedding, underwear, outdoor clothing, soft furnishings and gifts.
But despite the fact that Arthur, a dad-of-two, celebrated his 100th birthday a couple of months ago - he says that he "doesn't think" he will ever retire. "
Arthur said: "I quite enjoy it, it's good. "
"I like that we sell a range of stuff - ladies', gents' and children's clothes, school wear, bedding, clocks - quite a range. "
"I've worked in retail all my life apart from army service. "
"I don't think I'll retire."
Arthur's son David Ferguson, 62, added that even if his dad retires, he will still visit to "make sure that everything is okay and running properly." "
He said: "If I took over the shop tomorrow, then he would still come down. "
"He's the type of guy who would come to make sure that everything is okay and running properly. "
"He's been hands-on forever."
"I have no intention of slowing him down, he likes going."
During World War Two, Arthur, a great-grandad-of-two, joined the first Lincolnshire regiment and visited India and Myanmar, formerly Burma.
He also used to love going to Venice, Italy, in his caravan and going on cruises with his late wife Siss.
David said: "We live in Cumbria so we aren't far from the Scottish border. "
"He used to drive with his car and his caravan all the way to Venice. "
"He's got friends there from those days. "
"He would spend three weeks there on a holiday and then would drive back again."
"He's been on cruises and travelled to the Far East. "
"He also likes to play the organ and used to sell them at one point."
