Protesters accuse the university of complicity in what they describe as the genocide of Palestinians, amid ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza. Braving cold weather, students declared they would not leave the campus until their demands are met. Utrecht University responded by stating it would review its existing collaborations with Israeli institutions and expected to issue a decision by the end of next week. This marks the first university occupation in the Netherlands this year. Similar demonstrations have occurred on campus in the past, including an occupation of the university library courtyard exactly one year ago.
